One of the most dangerous things in a Google Ads account is a number that looks great and means nothing. Here is a real example of how a single misconfigured conversion action can quietly waste months of budget.
A dashboard that lied
When this roofing account landed on our desk, everything looked healthy: 318 conversions, a cost per lead around $10. On paper it was one of the best-performing accounts we had seen. The client had no idea anything was wrong — and that is exactly why it was dangerous.
Following the signal
96% of those “conversions” were taps on the phone-number button — not connected calls. Real, traceable leads (form fills plus call-extension calls) added up to 12 over sixteen months. The true cost per acquisition was closer to $263. The algorithm had been trained on a fake signal, so it happily bought junk Display taps that looked like wins.
The fix
Demote the button-tap to a secondary signal, repair Enhanced Conversions, and re-point the account toward Search — the only channel actually producing form fills. Bidding gets re-anchored to real leads instead of accidental taps. The lesson: audit what your conversions are before you trust what they say.
